About the Artist
Ammna Sheikh is a British/Pakistani artist. Her art practice celebrates her Pakistani cultural heritage where she explores the handmade, generational techniques and history passed down over the last 70 years within her family. She highlights the importance of handmade craft and intends to keep this practice alive as the rise in digital technology diminishes cultural practices. Sheikh's work radiates colour, pattern, language and even comments on colonial displacement. She uses techniques such as embroidery, screen-printing, weaving and painting. All laborious ways of creating her artworks, while documenting the amount of time it takes to create each one, highlighting the importance of time and skill. Sheikh’s work encompasses colour and patterns from the Middle East and South Asia which is reminiscent of her cultural heritage.

Ammna Sheikh received her first award in June 2023 and since then she has been awarded many other awards such as the RSA Patrons Award, The Edinburgh Printmakers Residency Award, Glasgow Print Studio Award and The NHS Lothian Charity Tonic Arts Purchase Prize.
